Part 1 - Example answer

I’ve been to the shops three times this month to buy milk. Also, I’ve taken four English classes this month. I’m taking English classes so that I can communicate with people when I go on my business trip next month. I’ve visited my parents twice this month to check on them because they are a little sick at the moment. Today, I have already had breakfast and written my sales report, but I haven’t finished my homework or met Simon yet.

Part 3 - Example speech: responsibilities, skills, and qualifications

Hi I’m Steve. I’m a system engineer at my company. I have lots of responsibilities. I’m responsible for taking care of all the PCs here. It’s my responsibility to facilitate all the PC training we do. It also falls on me to update the web page. I like this job because I’m good at using computers. I know how to use Microsoft products like Excel, Word, and Powerpoint. Plus I’m quite good at using Adobe products like Photoshop, Indesign and Premier. In regards to my qualifications, I have a masters degree in computer science from Saitama University. I passed level 1 of the JLPT and I have an MCSE.


Part 4 - Example summary

He has just finished work. He had a bad day. First, even though he left early for lunch, when he got to the lunch room all the good stuff was gone. Also, he spent all night preparing so that he’d be able to give the clients a great presentation. However, he lost his laptop on the way to work and he was unable to do the presentation. His boss told him that he was very disappointed.
He’s been a manager for five years and he’s been working at this company for over ten years and he’s never made a mistake like this. He’s so embarrassed. His manager should really like his next presentation, though, because he’s going make it really fun and interactive. Also, his boss has been on edge a lot recently. He’s wondering why his boss is so stressed.

Part 5 - Example role-play

A) Hello. Simon’s office. This is Wendy speaking. How may I help you?
B) Hello Wendy. This is Carl Smith. Would I be able to speak to Simon, please?
A) May I ask the nature of your call?
B) I’m calling to get his advice on a few issues.
A) One moment please. I’m sorry but, he’s in a meeting at the moment. Would you like to leave a message?
B) Sure. Can you ask him to call me back?
A) No problem. Does he have your number?
B) Yes, he does.
A) OK. I’ll give him the message. Is there anything else I can help you with today?
B) No, that’s all. Thank you.
A) Hello Carl? It’s Simon. I’m just returning your call.
B) Oh, hi Simon.
A) Now, what did you want to talk about?
